Qualia (English)
In a pure white world, there is nothing.
No heavens, no dinner menus, no dogs, no horizon,
no earth, no mothers, no shadows, no warmth.
Nothing exists there.
There is but one person there, a girl who is the exception.
Qualia
Where am I?
I question no one, to no reply
The more I look, the sadder the sight;
It's a world of nothing but white
There are things I want to tell
To somebody, hey, somebody
Even if I look up, there's no sky
Not even the ground I should be standing on
If I hear no one, what good is a world like this?
I feel wrong, and yet here I breathe
Breathtaking stars are made,
And I notice it's myself who makes them
Let the white world be colored,
And the spilling colors go everywhere
A paper plane the color of the sky
Soap bubbles the color of the wind
So I wonder, what color would suit me?
Perhaps pink ribbons
Purple birds come
And on green swings,
A worn voice sounds out
I'll give you some yellow candy
The now-colored world becomes caught up in its busyness
Even so, I still feel so out of place...
To know the color of my eyes,
There would need to be another to see them
But I'm the only one here;
I don't even know my own color
"Hey..."
The girl called out in a soft voice.
Of course, there was no reply.
There were only wild, vivid colors,
and shapes with no definite form.
"Is this what you wanted?"
The girl did not know.
What does this world have, what does it lack?
The color she sees - is it truly the right color?
For that matter, what is right, and what is wrong?
Tears rolled down the girl's cheek.
"The reality was that I was just lonely."
"I wanted someone beside me."
In the mess of colors,
You were there are my side
In your outstretched hand
Was red, a red apple
"The color suits you, so..."
"The color suits you, so..."
"I'll give it to you!"
Through bewildered thoughts and words,
If we can feel that we're loved,
Then I'm sure we can keep walking on
Within satisfactory colors
What makes these breathtaking stars
Is this world which I see with you
Let the white world be colored,
And the spilling colors go everywhere
"Hey..."
"What?"
"...It's nothing."
* If you want to get REALLY technical and keep the pattern, "pink ribbons" is "the color of peach trees." But it's also just a totally ordinary way of saying pink in Japanese, so. The intro is a piano part played in reverse. The white world more than likely stands for the Garden of Eden. If you won't accept that, well, there really isn't a lot to interpret. But hey, this section is labeled "pretentious!" for a reason... The god of the world starts by making Qualia and nothing else. Alternatively, this is AFTER she's been kicked out of the Garden. Not sure what to make of the reversed "don't want to go back," honestly. What exactly is the white world preferable to (at least, as of the first chorus)? So that could make a little more sense with the after-Eden idea. She doesn't know what she wants, so she tries to make things on her own. However, not knowing color (much less her own), she can't put much form to it. "I still feel so out of place" literally translates as "my body still feels like a lie," which could have some relation to Genesis and nakedness and etc., but I wonder if Hachi cares about the creation story on that kind of level. Either on her own or after being asking as such by the god, she questions if she can truly be the judge of what colors are "right" and realizes she isn't capable of doing the things she wants. Huh, you think "knowing what colors are right" has anything to do with knowledge of good and evil? Nah. The "somebody help me"s MIGHT just mean she wants help in trying to do what she wants, but it seems more likely she actually wants someone to save her from something. Either she wants to be saved from the colors she can't control (which she seemingly is by "Adam"), or, for whatever reason, she doesn't want to have to take the apple. Except that barely makes sense because Adam isn't even there yet. (Oh, and can anybody figure out if the gray things floating around in that instrumental part are meant to be anything? Seriously.) Qualia admits she only wanted company, so the god creates "Adam" (well, presumably, I don't know how else he'd get there), who, together with Qualia, is able to bring form to the color. She finally feels right, but having probably disobeyed God at LEAST once, she still feels somewhat guilty. But... "it's nothing." Sure, it's sin, but what are you gonna do? That stuff spills everywhere.
** "Red, a red apple" could be "a red, red apple," but I figured the color was just so important that it being something red was more important than it being a red apple.
*** CLICK FOR NOTES ABOUT... STUFF IN REVERSE, MOSTLY
The beginning (end) of the first line sounds an awful lot like "kamisama" (god) backwards. Most likely just a coincidence since "watashi wa" is hardly, uh, specific, but just saying.
After each chorus, Qualia says some vaguely-natural-sounding nonsense that sounds like "kaeritakunai" ("don't want to go back") backwards.
During the instrumental part, Qualia sings "dareka" and "tasukete" ("somebody save me") several times backwards.**** CLICK FOR PRETENTIOUS! ANALYSIS
