Dreameater on the Sand
(AKA Dreameater Girl)
The bougainvillea flowers bloomed,
Up upon the water tower
Searching among the lost stars,
Up into the wrinkled sky
Nowhere to be,
No stories to read
And the storks
Have taken the babies far away
Even your worst dreams,
I'll eat them all for you
May the pain, pain, go away,
With a calming song...
The bougainvillea flowers bloomed,
Up upon the water tower
The dawn looking like hydrangeas,
And the sleeping waterway clear
Trembling...
You're pretending not to listen
Dozing...
It just won't stop hurting you
The stories of your memories:
Tell them to me, in all the vagueness of their forms
I'll drink up even the darkness,
And let out a breath, a faint voice
Oh, now the outlines have been lost...
I sing a lullaby, for you alone!
Even your worst dreams,
I'll eat them all for you,
Because your tears pain me inside...
Even when it's just too cruel,
On nights you're drowning in it, stay at my side
On this morning, we dreamt together;
A dream that I was frightened to take in,
A pale dream that drank the light...
The bougainvillea flowers were blooming,
Up on the water tower's highest
And atop my perch, through lost stars, I'm searching,
Up in the wrinkled heavens' farthest
We've nowhere to be,
Nor stories to read,
And the storks have gone,
Taking all their babies away, far away from us
Even though you may have awful dreams,
I'll always be there for you to eat them all away
Send the pain begetting pain out flying afar,
Banishing nightmare with comforting song...
The bougainvillea flowers were blooming,
Up on the water tower's highest
Like hydrangeas, the dawn comes upon us,
The sleeping waterway at clearest
Trembling in dismay...
You're pretending that you can't hear
Your dozing away...
It leaves you so open to pain, and it just won't stop
Tell your tale, recount your memories;
I want you to tell me them, however vague the forms
Face the darkness in yourself and swallow it down,
Give me a breath, please, just the faintest voice
Oh, the outlines are gone; I suppose it's been just too long
I won't let us cry; for you, a lullaby!
Even though you may have awful dreams,
I'll always be right there to eat them all away
I can't bear to see your tears, they make me hurt inside...
Even though, with such harsh cruelty,
You may be drowned at night, just keep me right here at your side
It's a morning which we dreamt, the two of us both,
Though I was frightened to, I took it all down,
A dream somehow pale that drank in the light...
* The Vocaloid original is "Dreameater on the Sand," while "Dreameater Girl" is a cover sung by Hachi/Kenshi Yonezu on his Peace Sign single. The lyrics are identical. *
* There are two kanji for "sand"; the one Hachi chose is a bit less common, but someone suggested he used it because it looks to be made up of the kanji for "little" and "water." Well, mirages, that's for sure. It sorta looks like the oasis is actually the water tower (juxtaposition of the girl sitting over the edge of the tower and the edge of the oasis), except both vanish at the end, so probably not. If the water tower and oasis are mirages that occur during the day, then I guess the girl has to console the guy through the night, because when the mirages disappear, he realizes they're lost in the desert without any actual food or water. (Also, that equates the night with death, and that one always works!) In a somewhat meta way, "no stories" could represent not knowing about anything better/not having anything to look forward to like the WORLD'S END UMBRELLA couple did. Similarly, "nowhere to be" implies they have no so-called "surface of the umbrella" where they "belong." (And the babies? Man, I don't know.) The girl most likely has memories of whatever better place they came from and believes they'll be back someday (though she has to convince the guy it's not hopeless). Having those memories and that hope is why she would talk about flowers despite being in a desert. This is also why the girl would want the guy to talk about his own memories, however vague they might be. Anyway, the ending could pretty easily be interpreted as either happy or not. While she seems to be standing atop all the (mechanical-looking) dreams as if she'd conquered them, the song seems to end a note early and cut to black, so perhaps now she has to deal with them. I'm not sure this fits quite as well with the original Japanese (where it's literally "my chest hurts"), but it would be ironic that his crying "pains her inside" if eating his dreams to prevent such tears hurts her too. Well, eating that eye thing looked pretty gross in the first place. Ignoring all the specifics, it's really just a song about a girl sacrificing herself for her partner, in an almost motherly way (lots of people say it sounds like a more-upbeat lullaby), to get through hard times.
