In fact, giving the example of pebbles and gems in the first place shows I'm stuck in the preconception that gems are more valuable than pebbles. Living free of preconceptions is hard.
On the other hand, if someone values something, then even if it's hard for you to see it that way, you can't forget that it's a precious gem to that person.
So as worthless as someone else might think you are, that's nothing more than that person's interpretation of the world, so it's no use letting it trouble you. You should look at the wider world. It has Chibi Maruko-chan decal cars in it, for instance.
When something that's a pebble to other people feels like a gem to you, you should treasure it.
Value is something that can only exist in your own individual interpretation.
