I think about this with space elevators too, but when it comes time to make a design in the real world, the durability of materials becomes a big obstacle, making it so technology which is proven in theory can't be implemented in practice. It's terrible game balance, universe devs, so drop the "rigid body" expansion already.

If you can substitute for gravity with the centrifugal force from spinning a colony around, couldn't you make a nuclear reactor by spinning with enough speed to equal the gravity of the sun? (and yet, material that could withstand that)
