Saying "itadakimasu" is a show of gratitude toward life, so it's not for someone else's sake, you say it for the food in front of ya.
And the one giving the answer was Kotoge-san from Viking.
On TV today, they asked the question "what gesture that girls do makes your chest tighten?", to which I thought "the moment she says "itadakimasu" when eating alone, surely...?", then I heard that exact answer and did a quintuple-take.
