Come to think of it, weren't they updating the MIDI standard and increasing the control change resolution to 128ths?? When's that? Wonder if that'll make things a little more live-like... Might not if the synths don't support it, though...
Velocity basically means the speed with which the keyboard is hit, so "huge" isn't the right word there, huh. But in most cases, it's the strength assigned to the speed at which the keyboard is being played, so I tend to use the weird wording of "huge velocity."
I guess the most overwhelming difference between manual composition and a recording is dynamic range, but I really want the notes to stand out, so I tend to set all the velocities huge...
I know I'm a mouse-inputter, so whatever, but if a skilled player's performance was turned into MIDI data and played with Keyscape, I honestly don't know if I could tell whether it was live or not... It's amazing how they replicate that special recording feel.
I can understand why the artificialness leaks out for instruments like horns and strings where the note connections are tricky, but... I think the trickiest to discern might be piano. The Keyscape piano is seriously nuts.
If you record the sound of hitting drums and just play it like that, it feels like it'd be relatively easy to emulate a live performance compared to other instruments. But I can instantly tell when it's done manually, which is super strange... What's the difference there, I wonder... Feels like a live recording and a sampled synth are different from the very first hit.
When I listen to music, I have an unbreakable habit of immediately analyzing what instruments were recorded and what instruments were done manually...
Dammiiiiiiiiiit! Break through social distancing and let me make abundant contact alreadyyyyy!!!!!
You'd think since you're stuck inside you have time to do a lot of work, but my mind's worn down and my efficiency has dropped dramatically. I'm thinking about how the time I spent meeting people and talking and laughing and crying even when I was like "I don't have time" was important to me...
