Walking on a Star Unknown is a cooking adventure game by Segawa made in RPG Maker 2000. It has multiple story paths, two main endings, and lots of optional content.

While traveling through space, siblings Fukuro and Eddie crash on an unfamiliar planet.
There, they learn about the Gourmate Cooking Tournament, which rewards the winner one wish.
Aiming to win and have their ship fixed, they work with the people of Calpucca to make the best food they can.

(Content Severity: Discretion Advised)

Aspects of cannibalism (eating of own species and other sentient species, eating of humans). Details: "Huemins" are treated like animals, tied up and eaten by aliens who can't understand their language, with only a few characters being disturbed by this. The Sooticci are cute, fuzzy, sentient creatures that most think are delicious, and they themselves have no qualms eating their own dead.

Two characters who "love kids." They never "act" in a bad way (one is depicted as suppressing their feelings, while the other might do worse things if left unchecked), but alas, it is often played as a joke. Most of this content can be avoided if you don't interact with them much, but Day 2 does have a bit of non-optional interaction.

A number of dark and creepy areas.
Drug addiction and drinking (mostly in one particular area).
Themes involving the ravages of war.
Allusions to suicide.
Death and some blood.

Supported Platforms

The game's engine is made for Windows only, with no native support for other platforms.

The multi-platform EasyRPG Player mimics the behavior of RM2K and RM2K3, but may not always be exact. (Make sure to treat the Data folder as the game folder, not the containing folder.) Also, for Macs, you can try a general-purpose tool like WineBottler.

Troubleshooting

Make sure to extract the game to its own folder instead of running directly from the ZIP file. If you don't do so, any saves made will be lost the next time you run the game.

If you get a DirectDraw error, right-click the EXE, go to Properties, Compatibility, and try other compatibility modes.

If the font doesn't seem correct, download and install the MS Gothic font.

RPG Maker 2000 has some inherent, unfixable control bugs ("automatically moving in a direction" or "no buttons work"). The issues often seem to involve gamepads, or getting "stuck" on an input if Shift and a Numpad key are pressed simultaneously. Thus, try fiddling with gamepads and your keyboard until it fixes. (Reinstalling the game likely won't help.)

If you get "not implemented" errors on or near startup, make sure you have a working sound device (speakers/headphones). It can also occur mid-game if your system doesn't like a particular MP3, in which case, try to delete or replace the file in Music.

You may get "RPG Maker 2000/2003 RTP is not installed" or missing file errors on startup. This can happen if the path contains special symbols, causing files (including RPG_RT.ini) to not be found. Try moving the game folder somewhere without any special symbols in the path.

Usage Notes

Videos and live streams are allowed.

All the music (except Luna) is by Segawa, so refrain from reposting it.

Fanworks are allowed if they are clearly stated as fanworks and "are not made with the intent of profit." Segawa leaves it up to your own good sense where the border for this lies. (It states "if it's within the realm of hobby," so selling at conventions is likely fine.)

Do not repost or modify images from the game data or the official site. This includes the use of them for avatars or the like, as well as for use in sold fanworks.

Walkthrough

A guide through the game and all its optional content.

Each day has a Main Plot section for how to just advance the story. Note that there are two or three different branches for each day in which you pursue different recipes.

There's also a Sidequests section for all notable activities you can do on that day, or starting that day.

Walkthrough

Notes on Walkthrough Notation

If something is labeled "Day 1 Only," that means it's only available during the day on Day 1, and not on Night 1. If it's available in multiple time periods, they will be separately listed ("Day 1/Night 1 Only"), or it'll say "Day 1+" (Day 1 or later). There is also a "Morning" distinction, but I basically just treat it as part of Day.

[Meal Request]

Involves giving a person a specific meal. You'll receive a cooking level up as reward.

[Learn Recipe]

Doing the quest will teach you a new recipe or two.

[<Character> Quest]

Increases friendship with the character, or indirectly relates to befriending them.

[<Character> Bonus]

Increases friendship, but is purely optional for befriending them, as you can give them meals instead.

[New Area]

Directions for reaching a specific area, where there may be sidequests to do.

Tips For Not Missing Content (Minimal Spoilers)

There is a lot that you can overlook in this game, but not all of it is especially major. However, you can easily miss steps for befriending the non-taste-tester characters.

If you know you want to fully befriend a character, it's safest to refer to their quest guide. But if you want to more or less find things yourself, the following advice should help you catch most things.

  • Pay a visit to everywhere you can each Day/Night period, and talk to anyone semi-significant. (Note: You get a form of fast travel on Day 2.)
  • The Whispering Stone leads to some in-game hints for finding quests. To get it ASAP, go to the castle's east terrace on Night 1, talk to the Scholar, and do that quest.
  • Some artifacts for Waystern are randomly obtained from fishing at certain spots. NPCs may allude to them, but... don't hesitate to refer to his guide. None of it is "missable," though.
  • Midorino also has items you must collect without much help finding them, including a fishing one, and one that appears in a rather weird spot where it wasn't the previous day. So again, don't hesitate.
  • Befriending the Goddess has two somewhat tricky "time windows": an event on Night 1 has a followup you must do early on Day 2, and also, you should talk to her right after Day 2 judging (before night falls).

General Friendship Mechanics

There are six "food friends" and six "sidequest friends" (one of which is actually two people, but with shared friendship).

Food friends can be made to taste-test food (after renting Navi-Robo on Day 1), and have "final quests" at 30 friendship that get them to 40. Sidequest characters just have events or missions that increase their friendship up to 20.

You can raise a food character's friendship with food (or a small number of minor events) up to a certain limit. The limit goes up by 10 each day: it's 10 on Day 1, 20 on Day 2, and 30 on Day 3. A special conversation triggers every 10 friendship, with the 30 one leading to their final quest.

When you win the tournament, you can give your prize to anyone you've maxed friendship with. This will get you an ending with that person, and a password.

Passwords are usable at Demask Detective Agency to rewatch scenes, and in the bonus room to become that character.

Friend Quest Guide

Note: Even if you wait until Day 3 to start, you can always fully befriend any of the meal-tasting characters.

However, most sidequest characters have missable quests that make this impossible for them. Yurika and Waystern are exceptions to that rule, as their quests can be still be done as late as Day 3.

Ophelia

Reach 30 friendship on Day 3 for a discussion about a "proof of friendship."

Talk to the Sprite in Fidgey Forest Center. If you haven't already, go to Cardedisc Isle and offer a meal to the remains, then talk to the Sprite outside to get Sprite Dust.

Use the Sprite Dust to find the entrance to Bluebell Forest next to Ophelia's house. Proceed through the forest, and collect the Bluebells.

Give the Bluebell Garland to Ophelia.

Corme

Reach 30 friendship on Day 3 to get a treasure map.

Go to Amrita and dig up the four Slate Pieces marked on the map. (You need to have gotten the Shovel from Waystern.) Go to Waystern (he's at Wisetock Mines in the morning) to have him repair the pieces.

Throw the slate into the river in Metroville City. Give the Gold Ingots to Corme.

Badoh

Reach 30 friendship on Day 3 to hear about the Necronomicon. Find it at the Junk Shop on Poto Highway to learn you'll need to trade for it.

Get a Sora-Basho from Nuage, and a Fairflora from either the Mockingbird Hideout or Base Ruins.

  • Nuage Sora-Basho: Enter the right house and talk to the man. Check the mirror and break it. Go outside, and fall in the bottom-left. Afterward, ask the man for a Sora-Basho.
  • Mockingbird Fairflora: Enter the bottom-right storage cave, follow the Fungelite to the bar, and catch it in time.
  • Base Ruins Fairflora: Press the switch inside, then the extermination switch outside. Enter the bottom-left teleport, and pluck it from the Fungelite.

Go back to the Junk Shop and trade the items for the book. Give the Necronomicon to Badoh.

Toph

Reach 30 friendship on Day 3 to hear about Toph's concerns. If you haven't already, buy Drawing Paper from the Junk Shop on Poto Highway.

Talk to eight soldiers around the castle to have them contribute messages:

  • The two personal guards in the throne room, and the other two further down.
  • The two soldiers in the center of 1F.
  • The soldier at the bottom of B1F (who's knocked out in the afternoon).
  • The soldier in the jail (who's trapped in the afternoon).

Give the completed message to Toph.

Guntram

Reach 30 friendship on Day 3 to start a concert petition.

Gather signatures from eight children:

  • The two kids making snowmen in Eluta.
  • The Cheeze-selling kid in the Whitwoods.
  • Two kids in Nuage: one by the statue in the top-right, one in the left house.
  • Licoris in Metroville City Plaza.
  • Salmi and Akki, either in Metroville City Plaza (in the morning) or inside the castle (in the afternoon).

Afterward, look on the bookshelves in Guntram's room (the right door) to find the Music Children Love book.

Give the signature sheet to Guntram.

Twelam

Reach 30 friendship on Day 3 to hear about the "singing demon."

Ask the boy in Eluta or the boy in the Whitwoods about the singing demon, and he'll mention Cultney. Talk to Cultney behind the upper-right trees in Eluta and don't reject her to get instructions.

Sit on the park benches in order (bottom-left, top-right, bottom-right). Then offer a Viewsweek Monthly (buy from Opti Mart) to the Music Demon statue.

Afterward, go talk to Twelam.

Star Goddess

Night 1

Go to Yurika's house in Yunerium to find the Star Goddess paying her a visit.

Day 2

Before resolving the Sirene incident, to follow up the Night 1 event, talk to the Goddess on the castle's west terrace for +5 friendship.

Day 2

Right after the Day 2 judging (before nightfall), talk to the Star Goddess and say you'll ask Desmond about his goal for +5 friendship.

Day 3

When you go fishing in Nuage, there's a 30% chance you'll fish up the Star Goddess. Give her 3 Fried-Eyes from Opti Mart for +5 friendship.

Day 3

Completing Yurika's quest (refer to her section) also gives +5 friendship to the Star Goddess.

Medal

Find her in Umteto to give her the Shiny Gold Medal.

Desmond

Night 2

Find Desmond in Dangerion Hills at night (east at the Poto Highway crossroads). After the scene, ask who the old man was for +5 friendship.

Day 3

Talk to Evenezer in Metroville City outside the spice shop, and he'll ask for a bento. Go to Opti Mart and get one from the top-left shelf. (If you do this in the morning, Desmond will assist and pay for it.) Bring it to Evenezer to get 10000 Starvi and +5 friendship with Desmond.

Day 3

Upon reaching 15 friendship, go see Desmond in Fort Baobab and listen to his question for a final +5 to his friendship.

Medal

Find him in Dangerion Hills to give him the Shiny Gold Medal.

Yurika

Note: All parts of this quest can be done last-minute on Day 3. The first two quests here simply describe the case of doing them as soon as possible.

Day 1/Night 1

After choosing a Navi-Robo, go to Fort Baobab. Talk to the Kochka in the leftmost room. Go east from Metroville City Plaza to Umteto, enter the middle tent, and ask for the Excavation Rope. Go back and give it to the Kochka. You'll get a Cyuize Ring. Give the ring to the Commander by the clock tower in Yunerium for +5 Yurika friendship.

Day 2

Go to the Calpucca Castle jail to encounter the Kochka. Follow them to the treasure room, read the note on the wall, and take the Cyuize Necklace. (If you helped them on Day 1, you get it for free. If you didn't, they charge 1000 Starvi. However, you can also take it for free if you simply come back on Night 2 or later.) Give the necklace to the person at the Boneshop in Yunerium for +5 Yurika friendship.

Day 3

Find the Cyuize Brooch in the nest on top of the Base Ruins. Give it to the person at Yurika's house for +5 friendship.

Day 3

If you didn't do the Kochka events on Day 1 and 2 for the Cyuize accessories: the Cyuize Ring is down the hole in the leftmost room of Fort Baobab, and the Cyuize Necklace is through the broken wall in Calpucca Castle's jail.

Day 3

After handing over all three Cyuize accessories to the soldiers, talk to Yurika to finish the quest. This gives +5 friendship for both Yurika and the Star Goddess.

Rius & Daios

Night 1

After judging (or at night), talk to the Scholar on the 1F East Terrace of Calpucca Castle about looking for a secret room, and choose the third response. Talk to him again at night to get a note with a hint.

Go outside the castle and check the bottom-left statue to learn the name "Anteros." Enter "Anteros" at Toph's portrait on 1F. Adjust the crooked Red of the Black Bird painting on the left-side 2F stairwell, and enter the passage. Read some of the diary and return.

Finally, go to the spice shop and chat with Rius for +5 friendship with the couple.

Day 2

Talk to Rius at the spice shop to get Daios's lunch. Deliver it to Daios at Fort Baobab for +5 friendship to both.

Night 2

Day 2/Night 2

Talk to the Oedo by the mailbox in the right area of Tofu Town and agree to help. (He'll only appear there if you've met Midorino.) Go to Demask Detective Agency and ask Okame about the letter for +5 friendship with Midorino.

Day 2 or Later

In the bottom-right tent in Umteto, there's a Scholar who wants seafood stew. Give her Fukuro's Sea-Shell-Shroom Stew to get Kikamerci Ore.

Day 1

Main Plot

Go inside the ship to look for equipment.

Grab the Eater-Space Almanac from the left stack of books, and the Bulky Gloves from the small pots in the bottom-right. Go up the ladder to the control room. Grab the Langturns on the floor, plus the Cha-Ching Charm and Spritely Ring.

Head right and check on the creature at the crossroads. Listen to the Byoom radio transmission. Go to the top-right of the area and use the Cookteria kitchen to make any one of the available dishes.

Return to the creature, open the menu, and assign the meal you made to the "Give Item" slot. Then talk to the creature to feed it.

Head north past Nopass. Listen to Byoom again. Use the totem pole to switch to Eddie and move the rubble. Proceed north to reach Metroville City.

Continue up to the plaza and read the board to learn about the Gourmate Cooking Tournament.

Go to the Navi-Robo House in town. Talk to the manager and select a Navi-Robo. Your choice of personality decides the meal (and route) for Day 1.

Go-Getter

Return to the spaceship and find mom's recipe book under the bed to come up with a recipe.

Go to the Mockingbird Hideout in the top-left of the Red Forest.

Go to the bar and talk to the bartender. Talk to the Leader in the bottom-right. Make M'inty Tea with Eddie and give it to him to get an Icktater.

Besides the Icktater, you need Iam Sauce x1 (from the spice shop) and Regular Meat x1 (from the butcher's).

Cook the Meat & Potato Redux and give it to the Star Goddess on the west terrace in Calpucca Castle.

Lethargic

Cross the bridge in town to meet Soupirit.

Collect five Bienz Beans from the Bienz around Metroville City.

  • Metroville City: Top-right of bottom section, upper Bienz. Buy for 800 Starvi, or refuse once to get it for 400.
  • Metroville City: Top-right of bottom section, lower Bienz. Just ask for it.
  • Metroville City Plaza: Top-right, left Bienz. They ask you to look for their Spaceship Key (or something). Find it in Calpucca Castle on B1F.
  • Metroville City Plaza: Top-right, right Bienz. Bring them a Bizarre Boil. It's an Eddie recipe that requires Huemin Meat (from the butcher's), Iam Sauce (from the spice shop), and a Dondistherb (found in Red Forest and Fort Baobab).
  • Calpucca Castle 1F: Right side of bottom section. Agree that castles are cool.

Upon collecting all five, you'll come up with a recipe.

Besides the beans, you need Delishalt x2 (from spice shop) and Baylief x2 (found outside home and in central Fidgey Forest).

Cook the Beanful Soup and give it to the Star Goddess on the west terrace in Calpucca Castle.

Narcissist

Head back through Fidgey Forest, and it'll start to rain. Return home to come up with a recipe, and wait until the rain stops to leave.

Talk to Buddhuu in the area right of home. He'll ask you to get three Bones in exchange for Cacao.

Go east from Metroville City Plaza to Yunerium Highway. Check the back of the sign. Go right to the town and buy Bones from the Boneshop (bottom-left house). Return by walking left from the entrance sign.

Give the Bones to Buddhuu for the Cacao. Besides the Cacao, you need Abee Honey x3 (hives on walls in Fort Baobab) and Cooko Nuts x5 (on ground in Fort Baobab).

Cook the Warming Cocoa and give it to the Star Goddess on the west terrace in Calpucca Castle.

After having your meal judged, return home. Night will fall when you enter the forest.

(If you haven't met everyone in town, you'll be required to before leaving. Find Ophelia in the bottom-left house, Corme at the butcher's shop, Rius and Daios at the spice shop, and Toph in the castle throne room.)

Once ready to proceed to Day 2, go home and sleep.

You'll get a Whispering Stone. Finally, go to the spice shop and chat with Rius for +5 friendship with the couple.

(Warning: If you do the hunt, you'll no longer be allowed in Sooticci Village, so it's generally not "worth it." Besides dialogue with the Sooticci, this locks you out of the meal request there if you didn't do it yet.)

Day 2

Main Plot

It's recommended you talk to Toss-R-Us near your house. They'll quickly warp you to places you've been, and you can quickly return to them with the Belcomeback.

Go to Metroville City Plaza. Read the board for the day's theme. (Also, note that you can rent a Navi-Robo again. Doing so is required if you want to see a certain event at night.)

Go west toward Sirene, and keep going west to Innasec Shallows. Wait 15 seconds for the tide to recede, then cross.

Enter the fishing shop in the center of Sirene and talk to the owner. (Note: Which character you talk to the owner as decides who comes to help: Fukuro gets Guntram, Eddie gets Twelam.)

Talk to Guntram/Twelam outside the large house with two doors. Talk to them again inside the fishing shop to see the Ransom Letter.

If you don't have one of each snack from the Gourmeet, go to Metroville City Plaza and buy them. Go east from Sirene twice to reach the East Shore. Place the snacks by the parasol, then leave and come back.

(Note: After the incident is resolved, you get +5 friendship with the person you worked with.)

Talk to the fishing shop owner, then go into the shop and choose a rod. Your choice of fishing rod decides the meal for Day 2.

Sun Rod

Go fishing on the dock in Sirene to catch a Vertswimmie.

In Fidgey Forest (down and right from the Center warp), you'll bump into a person who lets you have their Sitrus.

The only other ingredient needed is Delishalt x2 (from the spice shop).

Cook the Vertswim Roast and give it to the Star Goddess on the west terrace in Calpucca Castle.

Moon Rod

Go fishing on the dock in Sirene to catch an Enigmafish.

If you haven't been to Tofu Town yet, eat all four of the Gourmeet snacks in Metroville City Plaza. Use the Whispering Soybeans you get from the owl, then jump in the fountain.

In Tofu Town, ask Midorino (by the rice paddy in the east area) for rice. Go to her house to the west and get it from the pot.

The only other ingredient needed is Iam Sauce (from the spice shop).

Cook the Enigma Sushi Roll and give it to the Star Goddess on the west terrace in Calpucca Castle.
