=== A Preface === Eastern Enigma is a personal project of mine that simulates what would happen if the Touhou series were one day localized for western audiences, in a way that most would liken to 4kids. Now, first of all, despite all the effort I've put into this, let it be known that I think officially translating Touhou would generally be a bad move. Even if the translation itself were totally acceptable (this would never happen), the act of licensing it would likely hinder fan involvement. Secondly, I started this as a joke (specifically, I was wondering how one would localize "youkai"), and it pretty much still is one. However, for the most part, I try to pick suitable localizations that retain most meaning - it's not exactly a "butchering" like 4kids fare. (And honestly, I think a number of the localizations are far too clever for them.) The fictional company behind this essentially assumes that their audience knows nothing of Japanese culture and folklore. Or anything outside of North America, really. This is primarily how they make their "edits" (along with removing reference to demons/hell/etc), though in some cases it's simply that I prefer a translation that differs from the "established" ones. Generally, katakana "English" names are left alone because there's little reason to mess with them. This is why there's no entry for Fairy Wars, because the Mischievous Fairies are all the same. There are a number of names which I would realistically leave be, but were changed anyway for the sake of humor and/or completeness. Which ones are they? That's for you to figure out. (...But most of the names that are simply "misromanized" are among them, yes.) For short explanations of my reasoning behind most of the names, go to the following link. https://vgperson.com/other/EasternEnigmaLogic.txt With that said, I hope you enjoy this look into the lives of Lucia and Marilyn, and the fantastic world of Illusionment. -------------------- === Places === Gensokyo - Illusionment Misty Lake - Foggy Loch Forest of Magic - Whimsical Wood Scarlet Devil Mansion - Scarletine Estate Voile - Voilà Mayohiga - Lostolia Hakugyokurou - The Nether Lands Bamboo Forest - Bamboozling Thicket Eientei - Eternity Halls Muenzuka - Forgotten Knolls Sanzu River - River Styx Youkai Mountain - Mt. Also, if Touhou WERE officially localized, there's no way they'd be included since they're on ancient hardware. But on the rare occasion when it is necessary to mention them: Violet (Yukari) had a friend named Mima who created her own world with two main heroines: Lucy and Mary. Eventually, though, some mysterious incident destroyed her world, and Mima (being a resident of it) disappeared with it. Since Arome (Yuka) survived the incident to appear in Illusionment, it's vaguely implied she destroyed it by accident. Then again, Alicia (Alice) survived too... Lucia (Reimu) is given somewhat of an origin story. As a child, she wandered into the area being sectioned off into Illusionment and was trapped there. Violet found Lucia, but was unable to find her parents, so she adopted her. She named her Lucia after Lucy, a heroine from her old friend Mima's world. Soon after Illusionment's formation, Violet realized the humans stood no chance against mythids as things were, especially now that the humans were much fewer. Thus, Violet created the human villages, dropped Lucia in one, and sealed them off until she was old enough to protect humans from mythids. Then Violet unsealed the villages and Lucia got to it. Marilyn (Marisa) was pretty much the same way, but her village was in the Whimsical Wood and was mostly destroyed by mythids when it was unsealed. (Named after Mary from Mima's world.) Both of them pretty much forget about their short time with Violet, but are aware that Illusionment is kept sealed by the "Nimbis Border." (Lucia has no involvement in its upkeep.) Since Lucia is new to all this stuff as of SF (EoSD), Violet is the one who instated the Magimemo (Spellcard) rules. Which, let's be honest, would make plenty of sense considering her position as a co-creator of Illusionment. Lucia's shrine IS, in fact, a Shinto shrine! Or rather, it was - it was abandoned, and Lucia simply adopted it as a base of operations for her Mythid Calming missions. As such, while Divina (Kanako) is still trying to garner faith in FF (MoF), this doesn't have much effect on Lucia personally; however, she and Marilyn suspect she could offset the balance of power. When the games get more into "competing religions" territory, that aspect is probably downplayed, and the focus instead put on the people "leading" each religion vying for power. When Violet is requested by Remilia to move the Scarletine Estate into Illusionment, she knows full well that it will lead to an incident. However, she accepts (then unseals the villages once the fog is released) because she figures it's about time Lucia and Marilyn get to their first outing. Incidentally, Violet also decides she'd rather not tell Lucia or Marilyn anything about their past because she delights in messing with people. Because make no mistake; Violet may seem a bit more benevolent than "Yukari," but her actions remain entirely manipulation to get what she wants. She has no intention, for example, of allowing Lucia and Marilyn to ever leave Illusionment, lest her entertainment cease. She claims their "wandering in" was an accident - it wasn't. This is why she really created Illusionment; if the mythid wars continued in the outside world, humans would eventually develop the technology to annihilate them. So instead, she intentionally limits humans in Illusionment to keep it going. Violet was not only seeking her own preservation, but preservation of an outrageous war for her own amusement. Melanie (Suika) drinks an endless amount of tea from her Infiniteacup. Which looks the same and all, but yep. Serah (Byakuren) is a Christian missionary. That... pretty much covers it. Just with "praise be" instead of "namusan" and all that. As a result, Rachel (Shou) doesn't mention Bishamonten or anything, and her lantern is more a "BE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD" thing. Also, the Floating Vault fragments which contain her brother's power become tatters of the Visage Shroud, because hey, you never see what the fragments actually look like in-game. The whole war between Shinto and Buddhism in Spiritual Scuffles (Ten Desires) is "simplified" to simply be Maydin (Miko) gunning for immortality by an unknown means, not Taoism. Usually, however, this is referred to as "the dark arts." Also, Maydin is referred to as the Tenfold Genius rather than the historical figure Shoutoku. So here's how the Spiritual Scuffles backstory goes: As the Feng and Carnation clans fight, Maydin comes to want immortality. Cerula eventually tells Maydin a means of achieving it, though she herself is "tainted" because she used a forbidden method, but believes Maydin will remain pure. Chloe is also interested in immortality, and Maydin approaches her with an offer: use their immortality to become rulers of the land after it's been ravaged by the war between the clans. She plans to awaken once the clans are both annihilated, but this goes awry when the Carnation clan emerges victorious and becomes known as the Blessia clan. The clan dies out soon enough, but Serah remains sealed in the Purerealm. When she is unsealed, Maydin is alerted and vows to finish off the Carnation clan herself if she has to. Oh, and Maydin's crew also dislikes Christianity because, in a way, it preaches eternal life. === EEoSF Introduction === Long, long ago, in the distant land of Nippon, humans were besieged by creatures known as mythids. No one knows where they came from, but it was said they took the forms of humanity's deepest fears. One mythid, however, was not like the rest. She was named Violet Nimbis, and while she enjoyed the havoc that came from the human and mythid conflict, she wanted it to stay within reason. She held discussions with the humans, and they reached an agreement: Violet would use her power over boundaries to section off a part of Nippon in which mythids could live freely: Illusionment. The sealing ceremony was promptly carried out. While at first it appeared to Violet everything had gone according to plan, it had not. A number of humans had volunteered to live in Illusionment, but quite a few others had wandered in by accident during the sealing. Among them were two children who had been separated from their family. When Violet realized this, she searched desperately for their parents, but it was in vain. Violet finally decided she would adopt the two children as Lucia Dremsly and Marilyn Rayne. As Illusionment grew, yet more problems became apparent to Violet. It appeared the mythids were simply too powerful for the humans to defend against, especially in their small number. To protect the humans, Violet decided she would have to seal off the human villages for the time being. But this defied her original intent; she wanted a way of preserving balance between the two. Her reluctant answer was to allow Lucia and Marilyn to grow up in the human villages until they were old enough to defend humanity. For this purpose, she also granted them special powers: Lucia with the power of Yin and Yang, and Marilyn with the power of magic. One day, Lucia awoke to a strange sight. Her village was filled with a curious red fog that seemed to block the sun. Known to be one of the most capable girls in the village, she was sent to investigate. Stumbling through the fog, she eventually discovered a small, abandoned shrine. She went in to investigate and found Marilyn, though the two could scarcely remember each other. Marilyn told Lucia that she was from the human village in the Whimsical Wood. Something had happened to the seal on the village, and Marilyn fled from the mythids to the shrine. "And I bet the same happened to your village, too! However..." Marilyn pondered. "I bet if we can find the source of this red fog, we just might figure out some of the mysteries going on here!" And so Lucia and Marilyn set out to resolve their first mystery: the Enigma of Scarlet Fog... -------------------- === Random Dialogues === == Lucia vs. Violet == [Azura Nimbis enters] Azura: You've come again? Azura: Oh, bother, I'm already tired today. Azura: I was just about to catch some winks, you know... Lucia: Hey, I promised I would come at night, so I did! [Azura Nimbis defeated] Lucia: About now would be a good time for the main event. Lucia: All deep in the dark of night and such... ???: Oh, may I begin my show? ]Violet Nimbis enters] Violet: See, you are just in time. Lucia: Oh, yes. And I would agree the timing's just right, too. Violet: So you defeated my Azura, did you, human? Violet: Knowing such recklessly powerful humans are around almost keeps me from sleeping at night. Lucia: "Almost," I suppose, because you took quite some time to get up... Violet: Well, I am wide awake now. Violet: But that is not important. You are... Lucia: Yes? Violet: You came from the ever-celebrated Dremsly Shrine, did you not? Lucia: Well, I did, but I don't see how it's "celebrated" in any sense... Violet: The Nimbis Border is weakening along the northeast end. At this rate, it could very well collapse. Lucia: Oh? Well, that's a problem. Thank you for letting me know. Violet: Ah, no. You see, that was me trying to tear a little hole in it. Lucia: Wha?! Well then, go fix it! [Necro-Phantasia plays] Lucia: Mythids will be mythids, it seems... Lucia: Humans have to settle the affairs of mythids as well as calming them down. Violet: Oh, so have you not realized? Lucia: Realized what? Violet: Here in these Nether Lands, the boundary between humans and mythids wears thin. Violet: For in coming this far, you have crossed over the boundary of humanity. Lucia: Well, I'm thinking it would be a good idea for you to go fix that border. Lucia: See, having you fix the border around the Nether Lands was my goal from the beginning. Lucia: So just head over, throw on one or two new borders, and you're good, right? Violet: One or two, she says... Violet: Do you really think I possess so few in my arsenal? [Violet Nimbis defeated] Lucia: Alright, now, as promised. Get to work! Violet: That was my intent regardless of the outcome, you know... Lucia: Stop lying, liar. You were procrastinating for who knows how long. Violet: That is because I was asleep. Lucia: I mean, that I knew! Violet: Regardless, I am here now and I am awake. Is that not proof enough that I will carry out the job? Lucia: That you WILL and that you ARE are two entirely different things! Violet: Compared against a lazy girl who has only resolved, at best, two incidents, I think I am getting quite a lot done. Lucia: Two incidents is a LOT! It's a hard job and I'm starting to wish I got paid for it! Violet: Ah, it appears dawn will come soon. Violet: I must be heading homeward bound to sleep... Lucia: So, all in all, you did zip. Lucia: Where on earth do you live, anyway? Violet: On the edge of Illusionment, much like your shrine does. Violet: The northeastern edge, to be exact. Lucia: Well, I know where to stay away from. Lucia: Refrain from tearing a hole in the border if you ever get the urge. Violet: Oh, did I not tell you before our battle that I did precisely that? Lucia: Will you go home and sleep already?! == Marilyn vs. Violet == [Azura Nimbis enters] Azura: You've come again? Azura: Oh, bother, I'm already tired today. Azura: I was just about to catch some winks, you know... Marilyn: Dang, that's some dedication. Pity, that. [Azura Nimbis defeated] Marilyn: Weird. Marilyn: Wicked weird, in fact. ???: What might you be talking about? ]Violet Nimbis enters] Violet: Perhaps the color of the moon on this night? Or perhaps... Marilyn: Close. The moonlight. Ain't it way too bright? Violet: The light of the moon is only a reflection of the light of the sun. Violet: That is the driving element behind the border of day and night. Marilyn: Well, you can't tell if it's day or night from this light. What's up with that? Violet: Could it merely be because we are above the clouds? Marilyn: Alright, so who're you? Violet: I heard about you from Azura. Marilyn: You mean the foxy lady? Violet: Yes, and I hear that she tried to give you some trouble. Marilyn: Give me? Or give the people of the Nether Lands? Violet: Well, I suppose I can be forceful with you as well. Marilyn: Oh boy, more annoyance. [Necro-Phantasia plays] Violet: You have not yet realized... Marilyn: Eh? Violet: Tonight is the night of a new moon. Violet: I have already taken the border of day and night into my hand. Marilyn: So you're a mythid of the evening? Violet: And with such a thing in my palm... Marilyn: You're gonna make it dawn? Violet: You are already within the confines of my borders. Violet: And within them, no dawn shall come. Marilyn: Huh? A mythid of the night blooms, then? Violet: No soul can find my borders' edge! [Violet Nimbis defeated] Marilyn: Oh, looks like it's nearly sunrise. Violet: And indeed, even I am quite tired. Marilyn: That wasn't so bad. Violet: I only just woke from hibernation, and am thus quite undernourished. Marilyn: Didn't you make a stash of honey or something beforehand? Violet: A stash of humans, you mean? Marilyn: Oh. Violet: I left a great deal to Azura while I was sleeping. Violet: But this year, I have had a rather unpleasant awakening. Marilyn: Probably 'cause the winter was too long? Violet: Ah, yes. That could explain the shortage of humans. Marilyn: "Shortage" of humans...? Man, can you just say that? Marilyn: ...I'm not so sure you can. Violet: You know, it is a trifling manner for me to manipulate the border of winter and spring... Violet: It is that you took responsibility for resolving it that made the winter's end so tardy. Marilyn: I didn't take the responsibility, and nobody gave me it. Marilyn: Besides, if you tampered with the border, the first storm of spring would be a north wind. Violet: Correct. Marilyn: Also, you're awake even when you're sleeping. Violet: Oh, sleepwalking? Yes, that is my forte. Marilyn: Your forte, eh... It's more of a syndrome, isn't it? Violet: No, not for me. Humans sleepwalk. Violet: Myself, I simply manipulate the boundary of sleeping and waking. Marilyn: Sounds handy. Marilyn: So, shouldn't the sun sorta be dawning soon? Violet: The time is quite past sunrise. It is simply night here, that is all. Marilyn: Geez, I've got bags under my eyes from staying up all night! You tricked me! Violet: I did not. == Eva vs. Violet == [Azura Nimbis enters] Azura: You've come again? Azura: Oh, bother, I'm already tired today. Azura: I was just about to catch some winks, you know... Eva: Don't worry. I'll let you sleep for a good, long while. [Azura Nimbis defeated] Eva: Has law enforcement always been like this around here? ???: There is no law here to enforce. ]Violet Nimbis enters] Violet: The reason being we can serve no death penalty. Eva: Really? Surely a Judgementor could pass down judgement? Violet: Merely surpass the Judgementor, and one can do anything. Violet: That is the kind of world this is. No, how all worlds are. Eva: Surpass her in wealth, you mean? Violet: I am speaking of craftiness. Eva: Well, you've been quite crafty at keeping your identity concealed. So who are you? Violet: I have heard of you from Azura. Eva: Wonderful, so I'm famous now. Violet: Yes, I have rather longed to meet one so famous as yourself. Eva: Got you to get up early, even? Eva: But I'll tell you in advance, no autographs, sorry. Violet: Oh, that is quite alright. Your handwritten chicanery will suffice. Eva: ...Handwritten? [Necro-Phantasia plays] Violet: You have not yet realized... Eva: That you're not at all crafty? Violet: ...That the border between paradise and inferno is blurring. Violet: And that this has become a lawless land of Daemites. Eva: Inferno? That doesn't scare me. Eva: Daemites are nothing when you work for my devilish Mistress. Violet: These flames bring the utmost of trepidation. You shall find no escape from them. Eva: I remain intrepid. Flames peter out eventually, and they can only move so fast. Violet: Ha, ha, ha... You are a funny girl. If it is your intent to evade my Shotwave... Violet: Do you believe you can be more nimble than a Nimbis? [Violet Nimbis defeated] Eva: Ahhh. Paradise. Violet: I have certainly never heard of anyone so evasive as that... Eva: Agility is everything. A nimble spider can capture something much larger than itself. Eva: Like a butterfly, for example. Violet: Capturing innocent butterflies is bad karma. Your house will surely be broken into. Eva: What, do you take me for a thief? Eva: I mean, dressed as a maid, I can snoop around all I want and no one will mind, but... Violet: Let it be known there is nothing worthwhile in my house. Violet: Although more can be said for it than can that shrine which also sits along the border. Eva: Well, even if you did have anything valuable... Eva: You wouldn't have it for long if all you do is sleep. Violet: How rude. I have many valuables. Eva: You just said you had nothing worthwhile. Violet: I have a bed. Eva: That's not particularly worth stealing. Violet: And a pillow. Eva: Okay, so you really don't have anything... Violet: But things do often drift in. Eva: Wait, is there a sea around here? Violet: Like children, and adults. Eva: You should, uh, send those back.
